Couple of days onboard the Matanuska

Riding Day 39    July 11

Onboard Matanuska

Ride Mileage :  0           Weather condition: rain and cloudy

Total Mileage :  7905

The Matanuska vessel is not a brand new one, built in 1963, this over 400 ft boat still provides reasonable level of comfort. The cabins are not spacious but they all have individual bathroom and shower. Food aboard is okay but do not expect a culinary experience. The bar offers pretty limited set of drinks, basically a range of Alaskan beers and cheap wines. The best is outside, the view of the coast from the ship is very scenic and keeps changing all day long. I’m just a bit disappointed by the weather and the clouds cluttering the view of the mountains.

The trip to Bellingham has few planned stops, all during the first day. First stop was in Juneau last night, then Petersburg this morning, followed by Wrangell and later tonight Ketchikan. After that it is straight sailing to Bellingham for over 40 hours with an expected arrival on Wednesday July 13 at 10am.

There is no WiFi onboard and no cell phone signal unless close to one of these towns.

The total mileage from Haines to Bellingham is about 1050 miles.

Tuesday July 12

I was hoping that this morning the weather would have cleared up but unfortunately it is still cloudy and rainy.

Weather started to improve as we got closer to Vancouver Island

If you don’t have a cabin you can put your tent on the rear deck

Whales. Too far unfortunately!
